Who Is Junior Horatio Alger?

Horatio Alger, Jr., a prolific author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, motivated his readers to work diligently and endure in the face of adversity through his writings. All 128 of Alger’s books highlight how, despite obstacles, anyone with self-motivation and a “can-do” mentality can achieve their goals.

Alger drew inspiration for his writings from his childhood in early to mid-century Massachusetts. Alger, the eldest of five children from a small New England village, was the son of a struggling pastor. Due to his severe asthma, his father educated him at home until the age of ten.

Alger, who was accepted to Harvard in 1848 at the age of 16 and took odd jobs to help pay for his education. He was hired by a local newspaper since he desired to write after college.

Alger, however, did not find success quickly.

Initially finding it difficult to make a living as a writer, he opted to seek teacher training at an all-male prestigious boarding school. During his time as a teacher, he continued to write and earned between $1 and $2 per piece. His first work, Bertha’s Christmas Vision, was published, however, as he eventually achieved popularity. One year later, nothing occurred.

Alger decided to return to Harvard to earn a degree in theology as a result of the poor sales of his book Nothing to Do. During this time, he continued to write, albeit under a pen name. After completing his education, he went throughout Europe and penned writings about his experiences that were later published.

Alger then shifted his focus to children’s literature. In 1864, he wrote his debut novel, Frank’s Campaign, about a young boy who must work to pay the farm’s mortgage while his father is serving in the American Civil War overseas. The objective was achieved. In 1865, the second book, Paul Prescott’s Charge, was published. Alger relocated to New York City the next year to develop his literary career.

Between 1867 and 1873, Alger wrote a total of 18 books for young readers, with Ragged Dick being the most well-known.
